Dating is a relatively modern concept that has spawned over a thousand Hollywood chick flicks and at least as many adaptations on the small screen. For better or for worse, most people first learn about the highs and lows of dating via movies and television shows. Who can forget Renee Zellweger in her iconic role as the Bridget Jones and her pursuit of Mr. Right? How about Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 days?
What about television? FRIENDS would never have been the same without the mostly sweet but sometimes awkward romance of Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel Green and David Schwimmer’s Ross Geller. The pairing between the former southern socialites turned waitress and the dinosaur obsessed Ross was a hit. Then there was Courtney Cox’s Monica Geller and Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing. The obsessive compulsive Monica and freewheeling Chandler made people laugh and root for them as they navigated the unpredictable waters of friendship and love. FRIENDS dominated the small screen from 1994-2004 and it is said that FRIENDS is one of the most popular television shows of all time.
More recently The Big Bang Theory’s Penny played by Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki’s Leonard Hofstadter has had people glued to their television screens. The contrast between blonde, outgoing, street smart Penny and the nerdy, MENSA level genius, socially inept Leonard struck a chord with many of the audience. Add to that mix the extreme pairing of uber geeky theoretical physicist in the persona of Sheldon Cooper masterfully played by Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik’s Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler, the equally socially awkward neuroscientist who has a predilection for getting her lab animals addicted to cocaine and cigarettes.
With all of these portrayals it really does seem that what we get our first taste of dating from what television and movies serve us. These movies and sitcoms may set unrealistic expectations and we are aware that most of the situations are exaggerated versions of what happens in reality but we also know that they are inspired by real life situations and maybe that’s why they continue to strike a chord of authenticity deep in our psyche.
However, lately dating has been getting a bad rap. With the rise of negative dating behaviors such as Ghosting, Stashing, Benching and Cat Fishing to name but a few the world of singles dating has become a perilous land mine littered with false hope and unmet expectations.
