Last year was a very good financial year for the company where I work. As a thank you gesture, the CEO decided that he would throw a party for all the staff. The gauntlet was thrown to us and we are to decide what kind of a party we wanted and where we wanted to have it.
Usually we have an end of year staff party that we sponsor and organize among ourselves. Since we naturally try to be as economical as possible, we always have the party in a nearby hotel which offers us discounted rates since it is jointly owned by our company.
This time, with the privilege of the party being sponsored by our CEO, we wanted to have the party out of town. The idea was to have a party that would run through the night. The evening parties are too short and many people complain that no sooner do they arrive for the party than other people start departing. We wanted a party where there would be maximum bonding among the staff members such that everyone could get to know as many people as possible within the company.
Our department, the IT department was been given the job of planning for the occasion. We were chosen simply because it is was said that we were the most sociable department within the firm. Within the department, we had members who were very outgoing and who had friends from all over the company. Our department also has the advantage of being able to move all around the company’s premises since our work is not restricted to one place. As such we come to familiarize ourselves with the many people that we serve.
As a department we decided to have the party outdoors since it was summer and we wanted to take full advantage of the weather. We chose a beautiful venue that was in the suburbs of the city and just a few minutes’ drive away.
We decided to further divide the work of planning for the party within ourselves in the department. Since I have a big mouth and had always boasted that I was a sleeping giant when it came to music, I was given the job of ensuring that everything pertaining sound was in order.
My claims as a dormant music maestro were hugely exaggerated. I had simply been the drummer of my high school music band, although we had won many awards during my time. Apart from being a drummer, I knew little else about music let alone setting up public sound systems.
This was however no big problem as I soon discovered. After doing some online research about sound systems for outdoor parties, I realized that there were many sound system firms that could provide the services that I was seeking. Since all were claiming to be the best, I decided to visit a few and see firsthand what they offered.
My decision to visit the firms was brilliant since I realized that by visiting the firms’ premises I could know more about them. Some of the sound system companies were flimsy companies that just leased equipment when hired and some did not even have permanent staff. I was however able to find a credible looking firm that had actually provided sound facilities at the very same site we had chosen. From the comments of their former customers, they also seemed to be quite organized and would produce quality.
